Tammy Bybee loves bloodhounds and has donated more than 120 of the loving dogs to police departments.
She’s bred the big dogs for cops across the U.S. as she works in law enforcement herself and understands the importance of bloodhounds in particular. They are known for their exemplary ability to track scents for extended periods of time.
"They're big stinky, slobbery, loving dogs," Bybee said. "What they can do is absolutely phenomenal though."
Bybee, of Virginia, said it all started when a pair of bloodhounds she owned had a litter of 15 puppies. When she reached out to local police to donate them, her phone started ringing off the hook.
"I was so busy making sure that everyone got their puppy that I cried afterwards... but I don't cry anymore,” Bybee said. "The handlers keep in touch with me. I get pictures of them and their successes. It's a beautiful thing, it really is."
Tammy pays for the breeding of the dogs out of her own pocket, but she said the reward is priceless.
The stories of her dogs finding a suspect after a shooting gives her goosebumps, and she's in awe that “God created something with four legs that had a [sense of] smell that was astronomical above anything you could imagine."
